Christian Bale goes from Batman to Gorr The God Butcher
It was revealed a few months ago that Christian Bale would have a starring role in the upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder movie. Marvel Studios has now revealed that Bale will be playing the role of Gorr The God Butcher. Production on the movie will shortly begin in January 2021, and Taika Waititi who was at the helm of Thor: Ragnarok will be back in the director’s chair once again for Thor’s latest outing.
The all star cast of the movie will also include Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman makes her long anticipated return as Jane Foster. Portman hasn’t starred in a Thor movie since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. It doesn’t stop there – Chris Pratt will also reprise his role as Star Lord and now of course we have confirmation of Christian Bale as Gorr. It’s also no surprise that Chris Hemsworth will be reprising his role as the titular character. Suffice to say, the star power alone in this film is enough to get all Marvel movie fans across the globe excited.
Disney held their Investor Day Event earlier in the week, where head of Marvel Kevin Fiege confirmed Bale’s role in the latest Thor movie. Fan speculation early on was that Bale would be playing Beta Ray Bill, and now these rumours can finally be put to rest.
The Gorr character was initially created by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic. The character initially made his comic debut in Thor: God of Thunder # 2. Gorr is an alien that grew up in an unnamed, empty planet. When Gorr lost his family to tragic events, he made the decision that gods didn’t exist – as he believed they wouldn’t let such a thing happen to his family if they were real. When Gorr learned that gods in fact did exist, he set out on a mission fuelled by vengeance to eradicate every god that he possibly could. Seeing as Thor is a God in his own right, you don’t need to dig too deep to understand where the problems between the two stem from. Of course, there may be different layers to the conflict between both characters in the movie.
Fans can hopefully look forward to some fantastic scenes between Bale and Hemsworth in Love & thunder, including at least one epic battle between their two respective characters at the very least. Hemsworth has come out and confirmed that Love & Thunder will not be his last outing as Thor, so fans don’t have to worry about Gorr having the final word in the battle between the two (phew!). In any case, the chemistry between all of these characters should be very interesting, and it looks like Marvel is going all in with Love & Thunder to ensure it is a critical and commercial success. I don’t know about you guys, but I cannot wait to see how this all unfolds on the big screen.
