Netflix To Release New Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie In 2022

Get ready everyone, Leatherface is about to pay all of us a visit directly in our front rooms.

We’re soon going to get another movie in the long running Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. This time, Netflix has bought the exclusive streaming rights for the film. Tobe Hooper was originally at the helm of the very first Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie back in 1974. At the time it certainly polarized audiences due to the raw brutality on display throughout the picture. The original Texas Chainsaw movie was also banned in several countries when it was released. However, today it appears that the movie has lasted the test of time and aged quite well. It is seen as a prime example of what a good horror movie should be like and aspiring film-makers continue to use it as their inspiration.

The main antagonist in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies is Leatherface. Almost a household name amongst horror movie buffs, Leatherface got his name as a result of donning a repulsive mask on his face made entirely of human skin. The franchise has received eight different instalments so far, and the ninth one is on its way to Netflix in the near future. Tobe Hooper passed away a few years ago, but he only actually worked on one other movie in the franchise which was the direct sequel to the original movie, which was released In 1986 – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Interestingly, the upcoming Netflix instalment of Texas Chainsaw Massacre is going to be a direct sequel to the original 1974 movie, and all of the other entries will be disregarded and not considered canon to the events of the upcoming movie.

THR first reported that the new movie will stream on Netflix. The movie will pick up right where we leave off in the 1974 original. Hardcore fans of the franchise should expect the same level of violence, blood and gore as the original. Directing this time round is David Blue Garcia. It will be the director’s first attempt at making a horror movie, after his debut film in 2018 entitled ‘Tejano.’

No official release date has been confirmed for the upcoming Texas Chainsaw movie as yet. Additionally, we’re also yet to see any meaningful promotional material for the movie. The only hint of a promotion we’ve received so far is a teaser poster of the movie which was released in October 2020. We don’t know whether this is due to a delay in production/post production possibly due to the pandemic, or if the studio has remained silent intentionally to build intrigue. What we do know, however, is that the new movie’s story was put together by Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez.

The several different entries we’ve received to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise to date have been very hit and miss. As a result, it is very hard to say whether this new movie will be a home run or if it’ll go out with a whimper like the majority of its predecessors. What may help the movie is that it is being released on Netflix so it’ll reach a relatively wide audience who already pay for the subscription service. That in itself could help build up a following for the movie which will aid its potential long term success. This could result in audiences receiving a proper three movie trilogy so we finally get to explore the character of Leatherface in greater detail. Only time will tell how this all plays out, but we’ll be sure to bring you updates as and when they become available.
